FOREIGN AFFAIRS

By Harvey Sahker

• Bologna defeated Modena four games to one to win its first Italy Series since 1984. It was also the first time since 1989 that a club other than Nettuno, Rimini or Parma captured the Serie A/1 title. Winning the series was gratifying for Bologna skipper Mauro Mazzotti. “I came here four years ago after winning the championship with Rimini for the purpose of building a program that could last for years. Season after season we got better on and off the field, and now we are celebrating,” he said. Catcher Nelson Antigua hit .429 and was the series MVP. Former Mariners farmhand Claudio Liverziani hit .412 and clubbed three homers. Bologna batted .337 as a team.
